going to war

so there I was, Cherry Point,
just come back from
six months in Japan,
and I was back at the Point
for who knew how long
en route to Saudi Arabia
where some nut in Iraq
was pulling some shit with Kuwait.

I called home and told my dad
what was up and that
I'd call him later on.

of course, word came down
the next morning to pack up
and meet at the hangar
ready to fly out.

on the flight, I imagined
all kinds of crazy stuff:
planes and helicopters unloading
troops with ready weapons into
the dark and unknown Arabian night,
firefights, explosions,
the whole bit.

it was daylight
when I arrived,
tents set up,
the ground flooded from rain,
volunteers being rounded up
to dig a bunker.

I found my tent, went inside,
talked to some of the guys
and began to settle in.
